In a perfect world, all school extracurricular activities would be fully funded. But with all indications being that future education funding will be significantly reduced, it’s painfully clear that we no longer live in a perfect world. As a result, school and community leaders as well as parents will be forced to determine how to allocate increasingly scarce extracurricular dollars, particularly in the areas of athletics and the arts. As the son of a high school football coach who virtually grew up in the locker room, an all-State, all-American and professional basketball player with an MA in Sports Administration and a Ph.D. in Higher Education who has worked as a youth sports director, at the NCAA and as Associate Commissioner of the Southeastern Conference, John has seen and experienced just about everything associated with youth, high school, college and professional sports. He has authored five books and over 40 articles in various journals and periodicals, the vast majority of which examine the role of sport in our schools, communities and American society.

John has extensive practical experience in this area as the non-profit he founded in 2006, Music For Everyone, has had a significant impact in Lancaster, PA. In response to those concerns in his adopted hometown of Lancaster, PA, in 2006, John established Music For Everyone, a non-profit organization dedicated to “cultivating the power of music as an educational and community-building tool” based on the premise that everyone deserves the opportunity to experience the benefits of music.
MFE began humbly, with one small fundraiser that raised $7,000. Under John’s leadership, MFE has grown to where it has invested almost $1.0 million in grants, scholarships and direct program support to school and community arts groups, including almost 2,000 instruments with which students can create musical magic and placing between 12 and 20 fully designed and painted pianos on the streets of Lancaster each summer through its “Keys for the City” program.
Starting an MFE organization in your community is not as difficult as it may seem. And the potential to have tangible community impact within a relatively short period of time is achievable, particularly when operating from a proven blueprint for success with access to experts who have developed and implemented that blueprint.
